Early College Planning Night Recap 2016

Early College Planning Night Recap- 2016

Early College Planning Night, sponsored by the Burlington High School Guidance Department, was well attended. Parents of students in Kindergarten through 8th grade were present. Jonathan Hughes from MEFA gave a very detailed and informative presentation. Many facets of financial aid were covered. Click here to view a copy of the slides covered that night.

Jonathan discussed the College Navigator Web-Site which gives tuition prices, % of students receiving merit aid and % of students receiving need based aid. We encourage parents to further research this web-site. The other two hot topics of the night were the Massachusetts U Fund 529 Plan and the U Plan Prepaid Tuition Program. One quote that resonated with the audience was " Children are 3 times likelier to enroll in college and 4 times more likelier to graduate if their parents save for them".

For Parents that missed the event it will be televised and streamed on BCAT.  Please see BCAT for times.

The display at the front of the school has a small number next to each of the words. People viewing the display can try to match up the where the language is spoken with the corresponding country.

Phonemic Awareness and Phonics

The following pictures show some of the tools we use at Pine Glen to teach phonemic awareness and phonics. Using objects when segmenting sounds allows students to use their motoric memory to store information in their long term memory. This in turn helps students learn to read.

Grade 4 Ms. Merlino

Today, students in Ms. Merlino's class did a presentation for Mr. Lyons on the benefits of having a service dog at Pine Glen Elementary School.  (Students write persuasive narratives as part of the curriculum.)  The research and categorization of information in the presentation was fantastic!

Burlington Police Investigating Suspicious Vehicle Approaching Children

BURLINGTON -- Chief Michael R. Kent reports that the Burlington Police Department is investigating reports that a suspicious man in a vehicle approached a child near a bus stop.
As a result, Burlington Police are urging residents and parents to be on the lookout for an older model green Cadillac car driven by a white male, likely in his mid-60s.
Yesterday, at approximately 3:05 p.m., a 6-year-old boy told his mother that he was approached by a man in an "older green car" near the intersection of Gedick and Gibson roads. The man allegedly asked the boy's name and where he lived. The children ran home and told his mother who called Burlington Police.
Police responded to the area and talked to two other children who said that they had seen an older model green Cadillac car, either two or four doors.
A license plate was subsequently called in by an off-duty officer but an investigation determined that this was not the suspect vehicle, and that this vehicle had not been in the area of theWednesday incident.
Burlington Police are investigating the incident and have taken the following additional measures:
• Additional patrols around school bus stops indefinitely
• Additional patrols near schools during arrival and dismissal indefinitely
• Messaging to surrounding cities and towns, letting their police departments know about the incident and the suspect vehicle
• Alerting public and media
Additionally, Chief Kent and Superintendent of Schools Eric Conti are encouraging parents to have frank and honest discussions with their children about strangers and safety while walking to and from school or the bus stop.
"The safety of our children priority number one, and we want to get this message out to the public to ensure that people have their eyes open at all times," Chief Kent said. "Anyone who sees anything suspicious is urged to contact Burlington Police right away."
If anyone sees anything suspicious or has any information on Wednesday incident, they are urged to contact Burlington Police Youth Services Officer Steve Cross at 781-272-1212.

Visitors from the British International School

Teachers from the British International School visited fourth grade classrooms today at Pine Glen Elementary School.  Michelle Ardizoni, our technology integration specialist, Mr. Lyons along with the fourth grade students and fourth grade teachers helped to show our guests some of the ways we integrate technology into instruction.  Our guests loved seeing how students used Foundational Apps on their iPads to show knowledge, skills and learning.

England has recently adopted a  national curriculum for computing or coding beginning in the primary grades.
